Is HYF for you?

A technical background is not necessary if you want to apply to HackYourFuture. However there are a few conditions you need to meet. Please read them carefully before you apply:

    HackYourFuture is a program for people who faced challenging circumstances in their lives.

    Our main requirement is that you have trouble finding a well-paid job and limited access to education. This includes refugees, migrants, people with disabilities, long-term unemployed, etcetera. Also, our program is for those cannot afford or attend a regular coding bootcamp.

    You speak English at an intermediate level.

    You can study a minimum of 30 hours per week.

    At HYF you will have responsibilities, deadlines and expectations to be met which will require a lot of time and effort. Our course is very demanding and also very rewarding!

    You are committed to working with us until you find a job as a developer!

    HackYourFuture is only intended for people who want to find an job as a developer as soon as possible after the course. If you intend to study further (and not work full-time), find a job in an unrelated industry, take a break for months or anything else that is not working as a developer, HYF is not for you.

The application process

Our application process consists of a few but very important steps:

1. Complete our application form

Our application form can be found here. We will ask you for your motivation letter and CV so have it ready when applying. Make sure both look professional without spelling mistakes. After completion of the form we will send you a confirmation email.

2. The technical assignment

The day after the final application deadline (exact date included in the confirmation e-mail from step 1), you will receive an assignment by email. You will have around 10 days to complete it. The assignment consists of a basic HTML/CSS course and after that you will have to make a website and a video. It is important that you take this assignment VERY seriously. We advise you to block these 10 days in your agenda and spend at least 4 hours a day on it. The more professional your website and video looks, the more chances you will have to go to the next round.

3. The video interview

If you do well on the technical assignment, we will invite you to a video interview. During the interview we will ask you questions about your background and motivation, and your technical assignment. Make sure to prepare yourself! We select 15 people from the interviews for our new class. If you are not selected for our new class, you can always apply again for the next one! Some of our best students have applied multiple times.

The majority of our students have a refugee background. However, we think many other people can benefit from our program as well. If you have limited access to education and the labour market you can apply to our program. This includes refugees, migrants, long-term unemployed, single mothers, people with disabilities/addiction, etc. If you are not sure if this applies to you, you can contact us at info@hackyourfuture.net.
No, we start with the basics of programming. More important than your background is your work ethic and ability to work in a team.
  • You need to be comfortable speaking and reading in English.
  • You need to be very motivated and willing to work very hard (30-40 hours per week at least).
  • You should be able to attend our classes every Sunday for at least 7 months. You need to be fully committed to HackYourFuture during this time and finish the course.
  • Dropping out during the course because of a job or internship opportunity is not accepted.
We teach every Sunday, so one day a week. Still, during the week you will have several responsibilities, assignments and practices you have to fulfill. We expect you to study a minimum of 30-40 hours per week. The more the better.
Our program is free. We can pay for your training because we are generously supported by sponsors and donors. We also ask the companies that hire you an ‘education fee’.
Yes, we cover all train-travel expenses to Amsterdam for the duration of the whole program.
Over 85% of our graduates find a job as a developer. We have a large network of companies ready to hire new talent. After graduation we introduce you to companies, and if there is a match, you can start your programming career. Often you will start with an internship of a few months which is followed by a job offer. Our graduates currently work for companies like Booking.com, KLM, Ebay, Owlin, Zivver and Screen6.
Currently over 85% of our graduates find work after finishing the program. However, to finish our program is a major challenge and will require a lot of hard work and effort.
Of course. However, we only accept students who have faced challenging circumstances in their lives. If you can attend and afford a regular coding bootcamp, we advise you to do so instead.
In case you are on welfare and receive support from a client manager (contact persoon) at the gemeente (municipality) it is essential that you inform them about your participation in HackYourFuture. They should agree and support your decision to HackYourFuture and to start your career with an internship (which is often unpaid at first).
Our program is very challenging and demanding. While some of our graduates managed to have a part-time job next to their studies, this is very difficult to accomplish. Additionally, when you are in our program we expect you to be available for classes and all other extracurricular activities that will help increase your chances of employment upon graduation.
